Mobile Growth Making New Records
The number of mobile users in India is increasing day by day. The report of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has revealed 9.22 m wireless users in July. It was 8.94 million in the month June. This is the highest ever addition in the subscriber base in single month. Both (global system for mobile communications) and CDMA (code division multiple access) operators are adding more and more subscribers.
Bharti Airtel added 2.69 million new subscribers and ranked biggest gainer in July. Vodafone Essar added 1.7 million new subscribers in the same month. Reliance Communication topped among the CDMA players by adding 1.5 million new subscribers. Idea Cellular and Tata Tele services have shown a bit low growth by adding just 1 million customers. India has at present 218.9 million GSM subscribers and nearly 77 million CDMA users.
Videocon, Unitech, Reliance and Tata Tele services are likely to start GSM services at the end of the year. The addition of new operators in the telecom sector would help the government to achieve its target of adding 500 million subscribers by 2010.
The wire line segment of telecom has shown the negative growth. The number of fixed line users has decreased to 38.76 million as against 38.92 million users in the month of June. The broadband base has increased by adding 19 lakh new subscribers in July and likely to further boost after the introduction of 3G services and internet telephony.
