Maruti Suzuki banks on R&D

Maruti Suzuki banks on R&DAs the Indian passenger car market set to double in the next 5-6 years, the country's market leader Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (MSIL) has decided to boost its research and design capabilities to meet the growing demand. Moreover, the company has also directed its vendors to move on a similar path if they are looking for a long-term relationship with the auto major.

In fact, it may be noted here that under a plan to regain a 50% market share in the domestic circuit, India's largest carmaker has also decided to focus more on domestic market and limit exports to take on growing competition.

MSIL Chairman R. C. Bhargava said in the company's annual report for 2009-10 that the company needs to rapidly develop our own capacity to develop and design products and it is doing so with the help of its parent company.

It is to be mentioned here that the company is coming up with a world-class R&D centre at Rohtak (Haryana) and has investing close to Rs. 173.30-crore in R&D in 2009-10 against Rs. 91-crore in 2008-09 in the Indian market.
