Maruti planning a 1000cc Alto

Maruti planning a 1000cc AltoAfter launching the new WagonR in the Indian market, sources in the company confirm that the Country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India is working on a plan to launch a 1000cc Alto in the Indian market.

It may be noted here that the Alto is the largest selling passenger car in the Indian market that sells close to 20,000 units on an average in the domestic arena.

R. C. Bhargava, Chairman, Maruti Suzuki said that it has been quite a while that Maruti's Alto have had a facelift but the company is working on its plan. However, he declined to comment on the specification of the engine.

While the source said that with the bigger engine, the new Alto will be a bit expensive than the current one, the company launched the BS IV compliant Alto on the existing 800cc F-Series engine last month.

The plan to launch the new Alto with a bigger engine is expected to be the part of the plan of Maruti Suzuki to switch all its products on to the K-series engines. The company has sold close to 13.5 lakh units since its launch in September 2000.
