Mamata to take legal action against Ratan Tata

The Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, who seemed to be enraged, alarmed the Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata of taking legal action against him. The TC chief resorted for the action as per the ‘defamatory comments’ made upon her and the farmer’s agitation that she led which ultimately compelled the Tata’s to shift their Nano Car project from Singur in West Bengal to Gujarat.

The TC Chief threatened the Tata’s in response to an advertisement published in the newspaper where Ratan Tata gave a warning to the people of Bengal about the "destructive political environment of confrontation" that the TC party was resorting for. He said, "The confrontative actions by the Trinamool Congress led by Ms. Mamata Banerjee and supported by vested interests and certain political parties... have caused serious disruption to the progress of the Nano plant."

Enraged on this, a senior Trinamool Congress leader Partha Chatterjee said, “Tata should explain what he meant by confrontative actions by the Trinamool Congress led by Ms Mamata Banerjee and supported by vested interests, also that he should come out with the evidence and establish that Mamata Banerjee acted for vested interests. The onus lies with the Tatas. We demand an unconditional apology from him, failing which we will take judicial recourse.”

The TC Chief commented that they were thinking to take up legal action against Tata Group Chairman. She said the Tata Chairman is directing the political line of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) that leads West Bengal's ruling Left Front but it is the people of the state that are the determiners of the political direction of the State. She added on saying, “He owes a lot to the CPI-M. He got Rs.200 crore (Rs.2 billion) from the CPI-M to set up the plant here. On the other hand, he had to pay Rs.400 crore (Rs.4 billion) to the Gujarat government for the proposed factory at Sanand. So, he is giving certificates to the Bengal government.” Mamata satirically remarked that it is a new form of joint venture that can be seen, a private brokership with government’s money.

Supporting the TC’s stand, the leader of LF ally, Forward Bloc, Ashok Ghose said Ratan Tata's comment on the internal politics of West Bengal was 'undesirable', people of West Bengal have a long political tradition. They will not take any lesson from Tata in this respect."
