The survey included a number of variables such as work environment, stress, physical demand, hiring outlook and income to determine people's feelings about their jobs. Lumberjacks features in the bottom 10 per cent in each category in the survey, according to the annual report on the nation's best and worst jobs for 2012. Researchers say that physical labor, declining job opportunities, a poor work environment and high stress levels are prevalent in the jobs voted worst jobs in the world.

On the other hand, the job of software engineers was rated the best job in the world by participants. The salary for software engineers is great, hiring demand for their skills remains high and working conditions are appealing.

Software Engineer was on the top of the list ahead of Actuary at second, Human Resource Manager at third, Dental Hygienist at forth and Financial Planner completing the top five. An Audiologist was on the sixth spot followed by Occupational Therapist at seventh position, Online Advertising Manager at eighth spot, Computer Systems Analyst at ninth position and Mathematician at the tenth position.
