Kindle Fire is best-selling item on Amazon

Kindle Fire is best-selling item on AmazonUS online retail giant, Amazon has said that its Kindle Fire tablet computer has been the best selling item on the online ecommerce website.

The company recorded higher than expected first-quarter profits on Thursday as the high tablet sales helped boost revenues from digital movies and books. Amazon chief financial officer Tom Szkutak said that the media sales increased in the quarter in the North American market manly due to high sales of its Kindle Fire tablet computer, which was sold exclusively in the US market.

The stronger than expected figures from the quarter comes after a report by market tracker comScore showed that Kindle Fire had captured more than half of the U. S. market for Android-based tablet computers in February a few months since its launch in November. Amazon had not disclosed the number of tablets sold on the site as it is company policy to guard figures.

The net income for the company as a whole declined to $130 million, or 28 cents per share, which is better than 6 cents per share of profit expected by analysts polled. Szkutak pointed out that the fall in profit is due to the investments made by the company in developing fulfillment centers, Web services infrastructure and video content rights.

"The good news is we have a lot of opportunity to invest and invent on behalf of customers," he said. "That's what we're doing. It is impacting our bottom line results."
