Iran schedules next presidential elections for June 2009

Tehran  - The next presidential elections will be held on June 12, 2009, the Iranian interior ministry announced Sunday.

So far only the nomination of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the head of the opposition party Etemad Melli (National Trust), Mehdi Karroubi, have been confirmed.

Analysts speculate that parliament speaker Ali Larijani and Tehran mayor Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf from the neo-conservative wing, and former president Mohammad Khatami from the reformist faction could also challenge Ahmadinejad. (dpa)
