India to Launch Low-Cost $35 Tablet 'Sakshat' This MonthA project supported by Indian government to design a low-cost tablet has been accomplished and the Smartphone will be unveiled by the end of this month. Government has recently announced that 10,000 Sakshat tablets will be delivered to IIT Rajasthan in late June and will be priced at Rs. 2,200 or $35. Also, more than 90,000 units of the Smartphones will be available in next four months at the same price.

The government has planned to subsidize the cost of these Smartphones for students by 50% and will be available for students for Rs. 1,100.

The new low-budget Smartphones is the result of efforts done by experts from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IIT Bombay. The phone will be distributed by HRD ministry and is expected to bring a tremendous change in the emerging tablet market in India.

The Sakshat tablet will be offered by HCL and these phones will have a 7 inch touch screen, inbuilt keyboard, video conferencing facility, multimedia content. The phone is also equipped with Wi-Fi, USB port, Linux OS, 32GB HD,
2 GB RAM and computing capabilities such as Open Office, SciLab and Internet browsing.
