Inadequate security led to attacks on Lankan players: Chidambaram

Inadequate security led to attacks on Lankan players: ChidambaramNew Delhi, Mar. 3 : Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Tuesday condemned the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore, blaming "hopelessly inadequate" security measures for the incident.

"It's a shocking incident. It's quite clear that the security for Sri Lankan cricket team is hopelessly inadequate," Chidambaram said.

Around a dozen heavily armed assailants attacked the Sri Lankan cricket team''s bus and a police escort as they drove to the Gaddafi stadium in Lahore for the ongoing second and final Test. At least six cricketers were wounded.

Chidambaram said that India is sorry for the Sri Lankan team, and hoped that the injured players would recover soon.

"We condemn that incident. We are sorry for the Sri Lankan team. We hope that the players, I read two-three names, Samaravira, Mendes. I hope that they are safe and they recover soon. We are shocked by that incident," he said.

Earlier, Sri Lanka had condemned the attacks, and called its players back on the first available commercial flight.

"It is appalling that anybody should have targeted a sporting team in such a brutal manner. The attitude of targeting sportsmen must change. My understanding is that the injuries are not serious, they are superficial. The cricketers are valuable assets of the country, they are the pride and joy of the country," Sri Lankan Foreign Secretary P Kohona said.

Lahore police said five policemen were also killed in the attack launched by unidentified AK 47 carrying gunmen, who fired rockets and hurled grenades at the bus.

Meanwhile, a Pakistani TV channel showed footage of two gunmen with rifles and backpacks running through the streets and firing on unidentified vehicles.

Sri Lankan and Pakistani media said Thilan Samaraweera seemed to be the worst hit, suffering a thigh injury. The other Lankan player admitted to hospital was Tharanga Paranavithana.

Until this series, Pakistan had gone without test cricket for more then a year because of security issues. (ANI)
