ICICI Prudential AMC: Richer Yields Carry a Quiet Quarter, Emkay Sees 28% Upside
Treasury losses dented profit, but the core engine beat expectations.
The Quarter in Brief
ICICI Prudential AMC, the country's second-largest fund house with a 13.3% share of industry assets, delivered what Emkay calls a "steady" second quarter. Mutual fund quarterly average assets rose about 4% sequentially to Rs 11.6 lakh crore, while revenue yield improved to 57.5 basis points from 56.3 basis points in the June quarter.
That combination lifted operating revenue 7% sequentially and 16% year on year to Rs 1,674 crore, about 3% ahead of Emkay's forecast. EBITDA rose 7% to Rs 1,215 crore, and the margin edged up 20 basis points to 72.6%, against the brokerage's 72.4% estimate.
The blemish sat below the operating line. Other income collapsed to Rs 16.9 crore from Rs 180.8 crore as mark-to-market losses hit the treasury book. Net profit therefore fell 8% sequentially to Rs 889 crore, though it was still 6% higher than a year earlier and 4% above Emkay's number. Core profit rose 6% sequentially to Rs 876 crore.
Where Every Rs 100 of Revenue Went
Out of each Rs 100 of operating revenue in the quarter, roughly Rs 70.5 survived as operating profit after every expense line.
■ Employees Rs 12.7 ■ Fees and commission Rs 7.9 ■ Other expenses Rs 6.8 ■ Depreciation and finance cost Rs 2.1 ■ Operating profit Rs 70.5
Computed by TopNews from Emkay's Exhibit 1 line items (Rs 1,674 crore revenue; Rs 493 crore total expenses).

Notes From the Earnings Call
Why yields rose
Four drivers: which schemes drew inflows, whether redemptions hit old or new money, the commission on each, and scheme size.
Redemptions, not sales
Gross sales held steady. The softer net picture is redemption-driven, including pressure in hybrid schemes.
The SIP book
Systematic flows include STPs that investors pull forward when markets fall. Goal-based SIPs sold through advisers stick; return-chasing and digital SIPs lapse sooner.
Alternates and PMS
Alternates yield rose about 1 basis point on mix. Net yield guidance stays at 90-95 bps. The board approved buying ICICI Securities' PMS business; approvals are under way.
The Product Signal Board
The most candid admission on the call was that ICICI Prudential has never built a large mid- and small-cap franchise, a by-product of its conservative, hybrid-heavy positioning. Management sees closing that gap as a five- to seven-year effort. Here is where each shelf stands.
Estimates Barely Move
Emkay nudged revenue estimates up about 1% a year but trimmed margin assumptions by 0.8-1.4 percentage points, leaving net profit forecasts within 1% of earlier numbers. Revenue yield is expected to drift lower, from 56.3 bps in FY27 to 52.8 bps by FY29, as assets compound.

Weighing the Rs 3,800 Target
Emkay's discounted cash flow model uses a 12% cost of equity and 5% terminal growth. The two pans of the valuation are almost evenly balanced, which means the target leans heavily on long-run assumptions.
PV of forecast cash flows
Rs 93,104 crore
52%
Terminal value
Rs 85,655 crore
48%
Fair value Rs 1.79 lakh crore ÷ 49.67 crore shares = Rs 3,599 (March 2027) → rolled forward to Rs 3,800 (September 2027)
At the target, the stock would trade at about 43x FY28 earnings and 34x book, against 33.9x and 26.6x at today's price. Emkay argues its brand and distribution reach will drive profitable asset growth.
What Could Go Wrong
Redemptions and volatility: net flows already reflect redemption pressure, and treasury income can swing sharply, as this quarter's Rs 16.9 crore showed.
Yield compression: Emkay itself models a gradual slide in revenue yield to 52.8 bps by FY29.
Mix gap: investors are rotating toward mid- and small-cap strategies where the company is under-represented, a gap management says will take years to close.
Editor's Note
Emkay's stock-data panel lists a 24.8% free float alongside 87.6% promoter holding as of June 2026. Those figures cannot both hold; an 87.6% promoter stake implies a free float near 12.4%. TopNews has reported neither as the free float.
