Haldi or turmeric, a popular Indian spice may help in defeating Alzheimer’s

Haldi or turmeric, a popular Indian spice may help in defeating Alzheimer’sHaldi or tumeric is used for various purposes in Indian households. It is used in cooking as well as in home remedies for various diseases. Presently curcumin found in turmeric is being researched as possible cure for Alzheimer’s. Researchers at the University of Southampton believe that curcumin could greatly minimise the effects of Alzheimer’s.

According to sources, this research funded by the Alzheimer's Society, will investigate if the substance can counteract the abnormal effects of the protein, tau, in the brain. These tau proteins become abnormal and disrupt the cell’s ability to communicate with each other and the nerve cells eventually die in Alzheimer’s sufferers.

Researchers will use genetically modified fruit flies to have nerve cells that contain malfunctioning tau proteins similar to those found in people with Alzheimer’s.

Lead researcher, Amrit Mudher, the University of Southampton, said, “Indian communities that regularly eat curcumin have a surprisingly low incidence of Alzheimer’s, but we do not know why. Part of our research will investigate how curcumin may help protect the brain and prevent the disease.”
