Hackers run Siri on jailbroken iOS 5 devices

Hackers run Siri on jailbroken iOS 5 devicesHackers are claiming to be successful in running Apple's Siri virtual digital assistant on any jailbroken iOS 5 device with a special tool developed by the coders for the purpose.

Two known hackers, Grant Paul and Ryan Petrich developed the tool called Spire, through which they run Siri on devices powered by iOS 5 after jailbraking them. Interestingly, the new hack is not technically illegal but is certainly not approved by Apple.

Petrich has already hacked into iPhone 3GS to run Siri and Paul offers various hacks through the Cydia app store. The Spire tool is also available on the Cydia app store.

Paul wrote on his blog that the tool "uses a new method to obtain the files necessary for Siri, so it doesn't have the copyright issues encountered by previous attempts."

The tool requires a iPhone 4S proxy server in order to be able to communicate with Apple's servers. The proxy server passes on the user's requests and gets responses from Apple servers. The hackers are recommending getting the proper proxy server authentication tokens from an iPhone 4S.

Paul has alsoa dviced the interested users to download the 100MB download Spire download over a Wi-Fi network. Paul has indicated that there is more to be expected from the hackers.
