‘Golmaal Returns’: a letdown of sorts
The Golmaal director, Rohit Shetty, has come up with a sequel to its breezy, mad entertainer. Despite the terrific promotion of the film, ‘Golmaal Returns’ is a major letdown in terms of content – it treats the viewer like a nitwit, with zero brains!
The claim of the makers that ‘Golmaal Returns is bigger, it’s better’ appears to have fallen flat! Barring a few jokes and gags, the sequel pales when compared to its first part, carries the baggage of monstrous expectations.
The story has Gopal and his wife Ekta (Ajay Devgan and Kareena Kapoor), living with Esha (Amrita Arora) and brother-in-law Lucky (Tusshar Kapoor). Lucky gets stuck in a yacht for a night, after saving an attractive woman Meera (Celina Jaitly) from some gangsters. The next day his suspicious wife confronts him with unending questions.
To quell Meera’s doubts, Gopal concocts a cock-and-bull story, about a fictitious friend called Anthony Gonsalves – giving fictitious address details. Ekta, not believing the story, writes to Anthony. Gopal convinces his junior at work, Laxman (Shreyas Talpade), to pretend to be Anthony. Everything goes according to plan till the real Anthony turns up!
To add to the complications, a dead body is discovered at the location where he had saved Meera. The Investigating Officer, Madhav (Arshad Warsi), who is Esha’s boyfriend, and learns that the latter had been missing from home that eventful night and begins checking on him.
In ‘Golmaal Returns’, Tusshar is the real scene stealer, while Shreyas displays his comic side very well. Ajay Devgan is likable, and Kareena does the suspicious wife act well. Celina stays on your mind even after the show is over!
