Visit Umananda temple near Guwahati to meet rare Golden Langurs

Assam, GuwahatiGuwahati, Oct. 26 : A visit to the Umananda Temple at Peacock Island near Guwahati offers a chance to see the endangered Golden langurs (Trachypithecus Geei), a rare species of primates. They have taken shelter in the compound here.

Built by an Ahom king in 1594, the temple is devoted to Lord Shiva. It is today visited by scores of such tourists who come here particularly for these rare monkeys and enjoy spending time with them.

At this temple, the Hindu gods and goddesses are engraved on the rock walls. These sculptures represent the craftsmanship of the Assamese artisans.

Pune illuminates with 65,000 lamps ahead of ''Diwali''

Maharashtra, DhulePune, Oct 26 : Around 65,000 earthen lamps were lighted up on the occasion of ''Deepotsav'' to herald Diwali, the festival of lights by hundreds of women at the Shaniwarwada Palace here.

The women worked meticulously, as they lighted up these traditional lamps popularly called ''Diyas'', to create fascinating designs and patterns.

A cigar shape motorbike to discourage smoking

Hyderabad, India, Andhra PradeshHyderabad, Oct 26 : An environmental activist in Hyderabad has come out with a novel idea to support a ban on smoking in public places. He has prepared a motorbike shaped like a cigar by scrap.

M. K. Sudhakar is already registered in the Guinness Book of World Records for making the largest tricycle in the world.

To make people break the habit of smoking, he literally hacked the cigar-shaped motorbike into pieces in full public view.

Magnitude 6.4 quake jolts central Indonesia

IndonesiaJakarta - An undersea earthquake registering 6.4 on the Richter scale struck off Indonesia's north Sulawesi province Sunday afternoon, but there were no immediate reports of injury or damage, the governmental seismology agency said.

The quake struck at 4:08 pm Jakarta time (0908 GMT) with an epicentre about 91 kilometres south-west of Gorontalo on Sulawesi, Indonesia's National Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said. It occurred at about 32 kilometres below sea level.

The alleged kingpin of the racket, Amit Kumar, and his associates are accused of performing more than 500 kidney transplant surgeries over a decade by procuring organs for paltry sums of money from poor people and transplanting them on wealthy recipients.

Five rebels killed in north-eastern India

AssamNew Delhi  - Five separatist rebels were killed in a gun battle with security forces in India's north-eastern Assam state, news reports said Sunday.

The clash took place late Saturday in a forest area of Nalbari district, about 90 kilometres west of Assam's main city Guwahati, IANS news agency reported quoting police officials.

"A joint team of police, paramilitary and Indian Army soldiers raided the forest reserve following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of a group of militants," army spokesman R Kalia said.
