Opposition leader denies inciting violence ahead of Zambia vote

Lusaka - A leading contender for the Zambian presidency has refuted allegations of inciting violence as campaigning in the race to lead the copper-rich nation drew to a close Wednesday with large rallies in the capital Lusaka.

Patriotic Front (PF) party leader Michael Sata said accusations from the ruling Movement for Multi Party Democracy (MMD) that he was stoking turmoil were unfounded, while refusing to commit to accepting the outcome of Thursday's election.

Sata, who was defeated in 2001 and 2006 presidential polls, is running against MMD candidate a former vice-president Rupiah Banda, who took over as Zambian when Levy Mwanawasa died in August of a stroke.

Pyrotechnics lessen this Diwali, emits less pollution

New Delhi, Oct 29: The morning after Diwali, a festival of lights was less hazy in national capital as people used lesser firecrackers to celebrate festival night after an appeal by the authorities.

The Delhi Government had earlier convened a meeting of Environment Pollution Control authorities, which decided to monitor pollution levels especially during the winter season.

The committee appealed to the public to desist from bursting fire crackers. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reportedly also monitors air pollution after Diwali to assess the impact of Diwali crackers on the atmosphere.

The campaign to wean people away from bursting crackers on Diwali seems to have borne fruit this year.

US investor Ripplewood favoured bidder for Daewoo Electronics

Seoul - Creditors of ailing Daewoo Electronics have chosen US equity firm Ripplewood Holdings as their preferred bidder after two failed attempts to sell South Korea's third-largest appliance and television maker, a South Korean bank said Wednesday.

Leading creditor Woori Bank said in Seoul that the takeover of Daewoo Electronics should be formalized by the end of this year.

New York-based Ripplewood will be granted access to Daewoo's books before the deal was signed, Woori Bank said, but declined to give details regarding the US company's offer.

Ripplewood was entering negotations with an offer of about 400 billon won, the national Yonhap news agency said, quoting industry sources.
