Bhandarkar’s Fashion Takes On Fashion Industry!
Madhur Bhandarkar’s most expensive film to date ‘Fashion’ has been released with its staggering 700 prints worldwide. The National award winner who seems to be inspired from the fashion industry has tried to portray the same world on screen and has been successful -- in projecting the fashion industry’s realm onto celluloid.
The story of the film revolves around a small town girl, Meghna Mathur who aims to make it big in the fashion industry and following her dream comes to the industry’s hub, Mumbai. The journey to make it at the top starts and so is the bountiful experiences. The to-be-model starts from the scratch having no strong background to give her a support encounters various personalities of fashion fraternity and finally makes her way ruling the ramp.
With success comes fame, name, wealth coupled with arrogance and over confidence for the lady that ultimately undermines her position dragging her down from the top slot. Meghna who is bewildered yet firm at the unlikelihood scenario she faces struggles again to regain her position. Her career graph bears semblance to a curve, shaped with its ups and downs, starting from the bottom, then reaching at the top and then again the downtrodden slide and her unceasing will power to make a successful comeback.
The writer seems to have their home work done nicely as one can encounter the amount of detailing done finely and precisely dwelling on the intricacies involved into the model’s life. The director not only gives an insight into the protagonist’s life but also the background of how the industry works ranging from pay packets for the prospective models, the labeling of tags by the designers creations of which are not their own, paparazzi, infamous models and the like.
The story goes at an interesting pace with few revelations and unconventional view of the industry. The top two designers played by Samir Soni and Harsh Chhaya are shown as gay while a male model enacted by Arjan Bajwas is appreciated for his uncompromising self esteem. The romantic phase between Priyanka and Arjan is also not much exaggerated. While the director is known for his uncanny style of ending the movie, this one ends on a positive note with the protagonist making it again to the top slot after going through a tough phase of disapproval and remorse and coming anew after realization of self.
Priyanka has been quite successful in depicting the struggle of the woman and her performance is worth appreciating as the actress have elegantly presented forth the various phases the model undergoes. Mughda Godse, the debutante also impresses the audience with the ease she carries her confidence with and Kangana Ranaut on the other hand is looking stunning. Due credit goes to other actors who have accomplished their bid with grace minus Harsh Chhaya and Chitrasi Rawat who seems to overdo at times.
