EU faces stagnation in 2009, Brussels says

European EconomyBrussels - The European Union's economy is set to grind to a halt in 2009 and only start picking up in 2010, with a deep recession looming in Britain, the EU's executive said Monday.

According to the latest forecasts from the European Commission, the economy of the 27-member bloc is set to grow by just 0.2 per cent in 2009, while the 16 countries which use the euro are set for growth of just 0.1 per cent.

Growth in 2010 should pick up to around 1.1 per cent for the EU and 0.9 per cent for the eurozone.

CommerzbankFrankfurt - Shares in Commerzbank AG bounded ahead Monday after Germany's second biggest bank said it was tapping the government's bank rescue fund for an 8.2 billion-euros (10.6 billion dollars) capital injection after posting a third-quarter loss.

The announcement it was to receive aid from the 470-billion-euro fund to strengthen its capital base came as the bank unveiled a 285- million-euro net loss in the three months to the end of September in the wake of the world financial crisis.

The third-quarter loss compared to a 339-million-euro net profit in the same period last year.

3,000-yr-old Bronze Age house unearthed in UK

London, Nov 3 (ANI): An archaeological dig has revealed traces of a 3,000-year-old later Bronze Age round house in Bognor Regis in West Sussex, UK.

According to a report in the Observer, a large extraction pit, containing a large amount of prehistoric pottery, was also uncovered in this area. The haul included the complete base of a pottery vessel.

The archaeological excavations were carried out last August during the early stages of work on the campus.

Carbonised remains in the pit may include seeds which will give archaeologists an idea about what prehistoric farmers were growing and eating.

On the future primary school site, remains of a later landscape were revealed.

The research led by University of California, Los Angeles has shown that HPV allows infected cervical and head and neck cancer cells to maintain internal molecular conditions that make the cancers resistant to therapy.
