Cotabato City, Philippines - Muslim separatist rebels attacked a southern Philippine village, torching at least 30 homes of Christian families, an army spokesman said Thursday.

No one was hurt in the raid on Sanga village in Kalamansig town in Sultan Kudarat province, 930 kilometres south of Manila, on Wednesday, said Lieutenant Colonel Julieto Ando.

Ando said about 150 Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels occupied the farming village, forcing some 500 families to flee their homes.

On Wednesday, government security forces launched air and ground assaults on the rebels, who torched the homes in a bid to slow down the troops.

"We are using OV-10 and MG-520 aircraft to drive them away," Ando said.

Bangkok - Laos will play host to the 17th annual Asia Pacific Parliamentary Forum in Vientiane on January 11 to 15, officials confirmed Thursday.

"We are expecting over 300 delegates from 17 countries," said Lao Foreign Ministry spokesman Yong Chanthalangsy, in a telephone interview with Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

Laos, a communist country since 1975, is under a one-party system. The next general election will be in 2010, in conjunction with the 9th Party Congress of the Lao Communist Party.

Locals have reported sightings of a bizarre tentacle-shaped UFO above a local wind farm, on the night before the wind turbine was mysteriously destroyed.

Several residents said that they were woken by the smash after strange lights were spotted streaking towards the 290ft-tall generator on a wind farm.

Dorothy Willows, who stays half a mile from the scene, was in her car when `strange lights' loomed in the evening sky.

She was among dozens who spotted the mysterious flashing orangey-yellow spheres over Lincolnshire - where the turbine was left wrecked.
