Spain offers to help Obama in closing Guantanamo Madrid - Spain on Wednesday offered to help US President Barack Obama in closing the prison camp in Guantanamo, Cuba.

Spain would, however, first want to be informed in detail about the legal situation of each of the Guantanamo inmates, Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos told Punto Radio.

Moratinos congratulated Obama for having suspended prosecutions at Guantanamo for 120 days immediately after being sworn in on Tuesday.

Russian oligarch buys British newspaper

United Kingdom FlagLondon - Russian billionaire businessman Alexander Lebedev has bought a controlling share in London's Evening Standard newspaper that has suffered sliding sales, its publishers confirmed Wednesday.

Lebedev, 49, had been reported to have offered to buy a 76-per-cent share in the paper, one of the oldest in Britain.

Its owners, The Daily Mail & General Trust, said it had agreed to the sale of a majority interest in the paper to Lebedev, who also owns a 30-per-cent stake in Russian airline Aeroflot and, in 2006, bought Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta with ex-leader Mikhail Gorbachev.

Six Pakistanis arrested in Spain on charges of aiding terror groups

SpainMadrid, Jan 21 : Six Pakistani nationals have been arrested on suspicion of tax fraud and investigation is going on whether they diverted funds to Islamic terror groups

A foreign news agency quoted the Spanish police as saying that they have arrested six Pakistanis on suspicion of tax fraud and investigating their links in fund transfer to Islamic terror groups.

The Civil Guard said in a statement the alleged fraud was carried out through telecommunications companies and officials are investigating whether any money went to "armed groups."

Protests continue overnight outside Icelandic parliament building

Iceland MapReykjavik - Protests against the financial crisis in Iceland continued overnight Wednesday with protesters lighting bonfires outside parliament, broadcaster RUV reported.

Some 1,000 protesters set fire to a Christmas tree outside the parliament building and also added park benches and sticks to some bonfires.

Police used mace and batons to disperse the protesters, who did not disperse until around 3 am (0300 GMT), the report said, adding that four people were arrested.

The demonstration was believed to have been the largest since 1949 when protests were staged against Iceland joining NATO.
