SSKM Hospital Performs State’s First-Ever Liver Transplant

liver transplantA successful liver transplant operation has been carried out on Roushan, a seven-month-old baby girl, at the state-run SSKM hospital in Kolkata, on Friday.

According to reports, this was the first time that a transplant operation was performed in the eastern part of the country.

The infant's father Rajab Ali, a mason from Burdwan district, donated a portion of his liver to save the baby.

The hospital functionaries said that the baby was suffering a serious liver problem from the very first day of her life.

Liver transplantation was the only way through her life could be saved.

Red Star's president quits

Belgrade - Red Star Belgrade, Serbia's best known football team which has sunk into total disarray, suffered another blow when its president Dobrivoje Tanasijevic resigned, local media reported Saturday. A 75-year-old Tanasijevic quit on Friday after failing to get the club out of financial crisis. The club reportedly owns around 30 million dollars to its creditors.

"Red Star needs a new president and I wish him all the luck. I'll still be, as a fan, with the club that will remain in my thoughts," Tanasijevic was quoted as saying.

The club sank into chaos last month with some players unpaid for months and some of them facing eviction from their homes. The club also had its water supply and telephone lines cut off for days over unpaid bills.

18 killed, 22 injured in China road accident

ChinaBeijing - A collision between a bus and a truck Saturday morning killed 18 people and left another 22 injured in south-western China, local media reported. A passenger bus traveling in Chuxiong prefecture, Yunnan Province, veered off the road early morning after being hit from the rear by a truck, according to the Xinhua news agency.

Sixteen passengers on the bus died, along with two passengers in the truck.

The truck collided with the bus, after the bus driver slowed to avoid a swerving vehicle ahead, the report said.

Zuma wins election but ANC set to miss two-thirds majority

With around 99 per cent of votes counted, Jacob Zuma's ANC had 66.2 per cent of votes to the 400-seat National Assembly, against 16 per cent for the Democratic Alliance of Cape Town mayor Helen Zille and 7 per cent for the the fledgling Congress of the People.
