Washington, November 14 : Natural raw materials like sugars, alcohols, or fatty acids may soon find application in the production of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), better known as acrylic glass that is widely used as a lightweight alternative to glass to make protective goggles and vehicle lights.

Dr. Thore Rohwerder, from the University of Duisburg-Essen, and his mentor Dr. Roland Muller, from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), say that they have found an enzyme that can be used for the biotechnological production of a precursor of methyl methacrylate (MMA), polymerising which is the key to PMMA’s manufacture.

Metropolitan Police enters negotiation to buy Scotland Yard

London, Nov 14 : London’s Metropolitan Police is to enter into negotiations for buying its headquarters, New Scotland Yard, after Land Securities puts the famous building up for sale.

The Metropolitan Police has decided to put in a bid to buy New Scotland Yard building, worth more than 100 million pound, which it currently rents.

Owner Land Securities put it on the market this week, saying it had generated “strong investor interest”.

The 20-storey building in Victoria Street, central London, has been home to the force since the 1960s. The decision to buy the site with taxpayers'' money was taken at a special Metropolitan Police Authority meeting.

Renault sales plunge worldwide in October

Renault LogoParis - Because of the crisis in the auto market, global sales for French car maker Renault plunged in October, forcing it to reduce its production levels, the company said on Friday.

The three makes produced by Renault - Renault, Dacia and Renault Samsung - sold 188,116 vehicles last month around the world, down 14.1 per cent compared to October 2007.

In Europe alone, sales were off by 16 per cent, Renault said in a statement.

Because of slumping sales, Renault said it would reduce its production levels so that its stock of vehicles at the end of 2008 will be similar to what it was at the end of last year.
