Germany legislates grandparental leave

Germany MapBerlin - Grandparents in Germany won the right to unpaid leave from work to care for young babies under legislation passed by the Bundestag parliament Friday in Berlin.

But the right is mainly limited to births from schoolgirl pregnancies.

The rule states that one of the birth parents must be under 18 or still attending school or trade training for a grandparent to qualify for leave. In 2006, Germany recorded
6,163 babies born with an under- age parent. (dpa)
