Dutch poll: European Union membership too expensive

Dutch poll: European Union membership too expensive Amsterdam - A Dutch opinion poll has shown that nearly half the population regard the Netherlands' contribution to the European Union as too high.

The countrywide poll carried out by public broadcaster NCRV involved 1,000 respondents giving details of their frustrations concerning the 27-member EU bloc.

The cost of EU membership ranked at the top, followed by the impact of the euro on the cost of living in the Netherlands. Only 13 per cent of respondents were however aware that the Dutch make an annual contribution to the EU of 275 euros (391 dollars) per person.

Dutch nationals are also annoyed by the EU's open borders, according to the poll.

The poll was to be broadcast on television later Tuesday as part of a show titled "The EU's top frustrations."(dpa)
