Dunlop India announces reopening of Sahagunj plant
Dunlop India is likely to resume operations at its tyre manufacturing plant at Sahagunj from March 6 after halting the production activities for more than three months.
About 229 workers out of the total 1,189 workers from the maintenance and engineering division have been called back to restart the operations at the major plant mainly for maintenance and refurbishment of the company. However, the company is unlikely to reopen the Ambattur unit in Tamil Nadu.
Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress-backed staff of the Dunlop has decided to hold protest during the reopening of company, demanding reinstatement of retrenched workers and clearance of pending dues. Nearly 300 supporters of the Trinamool Congress-backed Dunlop Bachao Nagarik Mancha are all set to stall the reopening of plant.
Mancha leader, Ananta Roy, said, "We will go on to picket and protest near the gate. The management has not paid our wages for October and November, besides other dues. We will request the workers not to enter the factory on March 6. If police tries to use force on us, the situation will deteriorate."
Political parties have also started to indulge in blame game in an attempt to woo workers in the forthcoming parliament elections.
Partho Chatterjee, Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly, said, "Since Lok Sabha polls are approaching, the state government is hoodwinking the workers by trying to open the factory. They are actually absorbing only a handful of workers."
