Disgruntled Vieri leaves Atalanta

sgruntled Vieri leaves Atalanta Rome - Veteran striker Christian Vieri has left Italian club Atalanta, putting an early end to a season marred by injuries and a bad relationship with fans.

The La Gazzetta dello Sport daily reported on Wednesday that Vieri gathered all his belongings before the start of Tuesday's training session at the Serie A side.

His farewell apparently stems from the jeers he received from home fans during a weekend friendly against Swiss side Bellinzona.

The 35-year-old former international last summer rejoined the Bergamo side after previous one-year contracts there in 1995 and 2006.

Some supporters, however, immediately began to criticize him for his departure for Fiorentina at the end of the 2006-2007 season.

He was fielded only nine times in the current season, often coming on from the bench and scoring two goals.

Vieri played in 13 clubs since becoming a professional footballer with Torino in 1991. He scored 236 goals in 473 games and also boasts 23 goals from 49 appearances with Italy's national team. (dpa)
