Czech judges face Lisbon Treaty oddity

PraguePrague - As the European Union struggles to save its reform treaty, also known as the Lisbon Treaty, Czech judges have to decide whether the document complies with the nation's constitution.

The EU version of the Lisbon Treaty before the Constitutional Court is marked as "provisional" until the pact is ratified.

But the Czech Republic can't ratify the treaty before the 15 justices issue their verdict.

Some lawmakers now suggest the court should not base its decision on a document that says "the authorities of the European Union are not responsible" for its content.

The Constitutional Court is unfazed.

"It does not play any role at this point," its spokesman, Michal Spacil, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa on Friday. "We do not have any complaints." (dpa)
