Cost-Effective Way to Clear Ears of Fluid
Researchers from University of Southampton have found a solution to the problem of glue ear. British researchers stated that if nose is used to inflate a balloon then it helps clear their ears of fluid. The technique is not only easy but cost effective as well when compared with a medical therapy.
By blowing air through nostrils, proper air pressure gets re-established. An experiment was conducted in which 320 children having the problem used nasal balloons three times a day. When checked after a month, 47% were not having the problem and 37% remained untreated.
The study researchers have affirmed that this problem affects four in five children by their 10th birthday. There are many things to treat the problem including steroids, decongestants, antibiotics and antihistamines, but all are ineffective.
Lead author Dr. Ian Williamson said the use of the technique may bring a decline in the need of carrying out surgeries. He said that some children have been benefiting from the technique.
The condition takes place when the eustachian tubes malfunction. These tubes connect the ear to back of the throat and drain fluid from the ears and maintain air pressure balance in the ears. Sometimes, it happens in children that the tube can get blocked and a very thick fluid builds up in the middle ears.
Owing to this problem, air pressure balance in the ear can be disrupted. Dr. Johnna MacCormick, an ear, nose and throat specialist at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa, said that mostly the problem gets solved with time. But there are some who need to seek medical help to drain the fluid in ears.
