Climatic Research Center E-Mail System Attacked by Hackers
In another serious incident of a major data breach, hackers recently targeted the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit (CRU), and stole emails from the system, which appeared all over the internet on Thursday. The police have been informed and a full investigation is being undertaken.
The email system's attack and data theft has been confirmed by a university spokesperson, who said that the emails were taken and published without authorization. "We are aware that information from a server used for research information in one area of the university has been made available on public websites. Because of the volume of this information we cannot currently confirm that all of this material is genuine", said the spokesperson.
The hackers have reportedly stolen over 1,000 e-mails and 3,000 sensitive documents relating to climate research over the past decade. Many of the emails and excerpts published point to the possibility that data collected about global warming has been tampered with.
According to the targeted center, the attack has most probably been undertaken to influence that UN Climate Conference which is scheduled for next week, in Copenhagen. It has been strongly suggested by the source that the data collected is highly misleading.
