Chicago man sues county sheriff for jailing him as illegal immigrantAccording to the media reports, a Chicago-area man has sued a county sheriff, saying he was held overnight as a suspected illegal alien even though he showed proof he is a U. S. citizen.

The Arlington Heights Herald has reported that Edward Bustos, 32, of Harvard in McHenry County, in court papers, said that he was originally arrested for driving with a revoked license in 2008. When he told a corrections officer at the county jail he was born in Mexico, an immigration detainer was placed on him.

It was also reported that the lawsuit was filed in federal court and seeks damages for "loss of liberty, emotional distress and pecuniary damages related to lost wages."

He tried to show the corrections officers his military identification card, which described him as a citizen. His brother also came to the jail with his certificate of naturalization, Bustos said.

He spent more than 11 hours in police custody and was only released the next morning, he further added. (With Inputs from Agencies)
