Cargo ship, passenger ferry in minor collision in Philippines

Manila - A passenger ferry and a cargo vessel figured in a minor collision on Saturday in the central Philippines but no injuries were reported and the vessels sustained only slight damage, the Coast Guard said.

Officials said the cargo ship MCC Sulu hit before dawn the left rear portion of the passenger ferry MV Wonderful Stars with 600 people on board while cruising the seas off Camotes Island, 540 kilometres south of Manila.

Elpidio Gunio, a Coast Guard station commander, said both vessels reached their respective destinations, with slight damages.

The incident occurred a week after passenger ferry MV Princess of the Stars sank off the nearby Sibuyan Island, at the height of a powerful typhoon, killing at least 173 people, with more than 630 still missing. So far, only 56 survivors have been found. (dpa)
