Caffeine intake lowers risk of erectile dysfunction: Study

It doesn’t seem like Medical experts have yet made up their mind regarding whether caffeine is good or bad for us. In a latest study, it has been found that drinking two to three cups of coffee per day could lower their risk of erectile dysfunction by 42%.

Recently, a new study was conducted on caffeine by the researchers from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. They found that men, drinking approximately two to three cups of coffee per day may have a lower risk of erectile dysfunction.

In April, the study was filed in the open-access journal PLOS ONE and was publicized on Wednesday by the university. The study looked at data from a National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of more than 3,700 men 20 years old and above.

According to the journal's abstract, the data has showcased that men who drank between 85 and 170 milligrams of caffeine per day were 42% less likely to suffer from ED, and men who drank between 171 and 303 milligrams per day had a 39% lower chance.

Furthermore, the data also showed that men who were obese or suffered from hypertension could still experience a fall in their chances of suffering from the condition if they fell into the same caffeine intake range. Obese and hypertension are two factors that can lead to ED.

According to David S. Lopez, lead author of the study and an assistant professor at UTHealth's Epidemiology, Human Genetics & Environmental Services Department, the only exception was with men, suffering from diabetes as ‘diabetes is one of the strongest risk factors for ED’.

The research has suggested that caffeine results into relaxation of arteries in the penis, as well as the muscle that lines its cavernous body, thus increases blood flow.
