Broiler Chicken Can Cause Breast Cancer – A Study Report
Panaji: A study conducted by Goa government-run medical college and hospital has discovered that constant eating broiler chicken particularly hen raises possibility of breast cancer in women.
Dr. R G W Pinto, head, Pathology department, Goa medical college (GMC), said, “The study was done over last five years, spanning 571 cases, hailing from all strata of society and economic hierarchy.”
“Use of steroid injection on the broiler chicken is the main reason for susceptibility to this disease. The study needs further detailing to confirm the findings,”' Dr. Pinto stated.
The specialists, who analyzed the statistics available since 1974 till date, found out that the breast cancer cases in the age group of 21 to 30 are growing in a drastic manner.
"On an average, we get 1,000 cancer cases a year of which 30 per cent are breast cancer. It is the commonest cancer we get in the Goa medical college,'' Dr. Pinto said adding that around 250 to 300 breast cancer cases are noticed in the hospital each year.
Talking about the co-relation between broiler chicken and breast cancer, Dr. Pinto stated that consuming hens enhances hormones inside the body.
“This eating habit over a long period of time along with other risk factors can lead to the breast cancer,”' he said.
The specialists said that factors including getting married late, late menopause, bearing child late particularly after 30 years, and women without child can cause breast cancer.
Dr.Pinto said, “Also, the lifestyle changes like eating excessive meat is a major factor. It is advisable to go for vegetable eating practices and fish eating.”.
The study results at GMC have disclosed that of the total breast cancer age group between 21 to 30 contribute 4.7%, 31 to 40 for 22.9%, 41 to 50 for 29.9%, 51 to 60 for 22.9% and over 61 years it is 19.30%. Interestingly, girls less than 20 years contribute for 0.34% of breast cancer analyzed in the GMC.
The physicians dealing with this disease have suggested the women to loose weight by workouts.
“Walking is a good exercise… also, they should eat more fruits and vegetables. Avoid eating meat often and drinking aerated drinks,” Dr. Pinto added.
