Breakthrough Listen makes initiative to search for extraterrestrial intelligence

One more time, search for extraterrestrial intelligence has come into limelight. Russian billionaire Yuri Milner will be funding US$100 million in the project called Breakthrough Listen to search for signals from aliens. The project will continue for 10 years.

It is not a new idea that humans are not alone in the universe. A number of researches have also been done. Now, this new project is going to start for which UC Berkeley will join hands with the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia, the Australia Telescope National Facility and the University of California's Lick Observatory.

With the use of telescopes, the researchers will look to achieve their target. Dan Werthimer, chief scientist of the SETI@home project, said that it is a big question, are we alone? Now, technology is available and it is hoped that answer to the question will be found.

Telescopes are able to collect data of quite a wide range of frequencies. The Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia is said to be largest steerable radio telescope in the world. With the help of new funding, scientists involved in the project will be able to use instruments to record and assess a massive amount of data from hundred-thousand stars.

The ATNF telescope in Australia will be given duty to observe the Southern Hemisphere and the Green Bank and Lick Observatory will be observing the Northern Hemisphere. "The Breakthrough Initiative will be a more sustained and sensitive search than was ever possible before. Each day, it will gather more data than a year of any previous searches", affirmed Martin Rees, head of an advisory committee to Breakthrough Listen.
