Bombardier opens railways equipment utility in Gujarat
Leading railways equipment manufacturer, Bombardier Transportation, has decided to increase its presence in India. It would develop India as a metro car production hub for the Southeast Asian region, in the next 4-5 years.
The company launched a new railway vehicle-making facility at Savli, Vadodara in Gujarat. It would produce stainless steel car bodies and bogies and carry out final assembly at Savli plant. It would start operation very soon, after orders of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).
The company would invest Rs 199.45 crore and generate 750 direct and 2,000 indirect jobs in its local supplier base. The chairman of Bombardier, Laurent Beaudoin said that the company started its operations more than 60 years ago in Canada as a family business. The recent facility at Savli represents its expansion and growth story from family business to global leader in the rail transportation sector.
Bombardier would deliver first order of 424 metro cars to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and also provide equipment to the rest of Indian as well as south-east Asian market.
Berlin based company is also looking for projects from Singapore, Thailand and other Asian nations. It has recently been awarded a $377-million order to supply MOVIA metro cars to Singapore.
