BJP demands inquiry into Wal-Mart lobbying in India
India's main opposition party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded a probe into the allegations that US based retail giant, Wal-Mart lobbied to enter the Indian market.
The country's parliament recently approved the government's decision to allow 51 per cent FDI in multi-brand retail in the country allowing global retail giants like Wal-Mark to inter the Indian market. The government has been backing the move to allow FDI while some opposition parties took the government to a confidence vote on the issue, before the legislators voted to uphold the government's decision.
BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said, "At a time when floor management in the House to get FDI in retail passed is being talked about, reports of Walmart mentioning expenditure of 125 crores for lobbying to enter into the lucrative Indian market are a serious matter. The decision should be put on hold, inquiry should be ordered and the government should respond. Lobbying is a crime in India." He raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha and demanded a probe into who received any money from the retail giant.
Congress MP Rajiv Shukla and MoS PMO V Narayanasamy have responded by saying that the concerned department will look into the matter.
