Authorities Confirm Introduction of Domain Names in Indian Languages by June 2010
As of now, domain names, or the unique identity to access the web, have only been circulated with Latin characters, but soon they will be made available in Indian languages especially for the Indian audience. The scheduled launch of Indian domain names is expected to happen as soon as June 2100.
Revolutionizing the way the web has been accessed for so long, International Domain Names, which till now allowed only Latin characters. allowing only localities which used Latin as their script to have domain names in their own language, will now be able to support the script of various Indian languages.
"ICANN and the initiative of the Government of India have ensured that you can have your Domain Name in an Indian language and soon be able to type and access the C-DAC site", a source has reported. The change has been brought on by a joint effort of C-DAC, GIST and P7une, in close association with DIT and with huge contributions from C-DAC Kolkata and Thiruvananthapuram. Together, these institutions have evolved a policy document for IDN in various Indian languages.
The project has been developed over three years, and out of 22 languages selected as ones that can be employed in domain names, work on 14 has been successfully completed, with others to be taken up soon.
The project's policy is in place, and now developers are looking to involve authorities including the Domain Name registrars, web portal developers and designers, language and educational experts and e-government representatives, among others, all of who will provide their feedback on the structure of the project.
