Researchers were shocked to know that plastic has become so widespread that now 90% of seabirds eat it now and by 2050, every bird will. Researchers raised concerns by unveiling that with passage of time, rise in number of individuals eating plastic has been witnessed.

Study researchers have reached at the conclusion by assessed 186 seabird species across the globe. Southern parts of the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans are the areas, where plastic pollution has its greatest impact.

The researchers said that between 1962 and 2012, 20% of individual seabirds were having plastic in their gut. Study's lead author Chris Wilcox, a research scientist with Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization said that the findings are shocking.

Plastic found inside the birds include bags, bottle caps, and synthetic fibers from clothing and small bits. Researchers said that in 1960, plastic was in the stomach of less than 5% of birds, but by 1980, the percentage has jumped to 80.

Wilcox affirmed that plastic production doubles after every 11 years. "So in the next 11 years, we'll make as much plastic as we've made since plastic was invented. Seabirds' ingestion of plastic is tracking with that", said Wilcox.

The researchers have also reviewed a research and its findings were then compiled with maps showing the range of 186 seabirds. The researchers said that large birds like albatross eat large amount of plastics. Plastic consumption can lead to holes in internal organs of the birds.
