Zimbabwe's MDC in court to force poll results release

Harare - Zimbabwe's opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) lodged an urgent application in the country's High Court Friday to force the election commission to hurry the release of results from last weekend's elections, South African radio reported.

Six days after the elections, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has yet to release results from the presidential vote, in which longtime leader President Robert Mugabe faces a strong challenge to his 28-year rule from MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai.

The country's election laws stipulate that ZEC must release results from elections within six days of voting but within hours of the deadline there was no indication of when Zimbabweans would know whether, as the opposition claims, Mugabe had been shown the door.

Mugabe's Zanu-PF party was defeated in elections to the 210-seat House of Assembly.

A Zanu-PF spokesman said Thursday the 84-year-old strongman would "fight to the last" if it came to a runoff between Mugabe and Tsvangirai. (dpa)
