Wegmans issues Recall for Bottled Water over E.Coli Bacteria Contamination Fears

A recall for some bottled water that may contain E.coli bacteria has come from the Wegmans supermarket. The E.coli-contaminated bottled water was shipped to only three states: New York, Massachusetts, and Erie, Pennsylvania.

The recall involves the 16.9 oz plastic bottles of Wegmans store-brand Food You Feel Good About Spring Water. No reports have come up so far related to illnesses caused by the water. However, the recall was issued by Wegmans to act proactively to avoid any case of sickness due to consuming the water that is likely contaminated with E.coli.

Wegmans wrote in its product recall message to consumers that anyone can seek a full refund by returning the recalled bottled water to any Wegmans store.

Experts say E.coli is a deadly food-borne illness, which has become more prevalent in the developed world. E.coli outbreaks have caused many deaths in the past, particularly among children. They say no harm is posed by most strains, but virulent strains can cause gastroenteritis, urinary tract infections, and neonatal meningitis, in addition to severe abdominal cramps, fever, and other signs of gastrointestinal distress.

When severe, it can cause bowel necrosis and perforation leading to severe complications. Wegmans has issued a second recall within a period of 12 months. Its previous recall came in July 2014 when some of its baked goods were involved in a Listeria outbreak due to contaminated fruit.

Anyone can give a call to Wegmans Consumer Affairs from 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday at (855) 934-3663 to find answers to their questions related to the recall.
