Video shows slaughter of 250 Pilot Whales

A video shows slaughter of 250 pilot whales in the Danish-owned Faroe Islands. Sea Shepherd, a non-profit marine conservation society, has recorded the brutal killings of the whales, which were carried out as a part of an annual event known as the grindadrap. In the event, local people first lure the animals to the shore and then attack them with lances and knives.

Five members of Sea Shepherd tried to stop the event, but they were arrested. A hashtag #BoycottDenmark has been created on Twitter, which has been shocking people across the world. MarineBio Conservation Society stated that pilot whales are not considered endangered.

These animals are hunted for their meat, bone, oil and for fertilizer. In the north Atlantic islands, pilot whale meat is considered to be among the most important products being bought and sold by the local population.

Campaign Whale, a non-profit organization, said that on an average 800 pilot whales are driven ashore and slaughtered for their meat and blubber in the Faroe Islands. Sea Shepherd activists said, "a massive pod of around 150 pilot whales was spotted close to the Mykines in the west of the Faroe Islands archipelago. A flotilla of small boats drove the pod to Bour".

After that the crowds dragged the animals quite violently on the killing beach. As per the activists, the Danish Navy was present at the scene and helping the whalers.
