Vedanta Resources to spend Rs 40,135 crore on capacity expansion

Vedanta Resources PLCVedanta Resources, a global diversified and integrated metals and mining group headquartered in London, has decided to spend another Rs 40,135 crore on capacity expansion in aluminum, copper, iron, zinc, ore and power sectors in the country.

With the improved market conditions, the company has also plan to commence construction of its power project in Punjab, which was on hold after the financial downturn.

A company official, who did want to be identified, has informed that the first of its major projects accomplished would be the 500 kilo-tonne per annum (ktpa) aluminum smelter and associated captive power plant at Jharsuguda in Orissa by the end of this fiscal. The investment of Rs 9,900 crore for the project has been almost finished, except a power plant, all the remaining projects would be realized by 2012.

The company stated in its business review report that it has reexamined its capital expenditure plan and made up one's mind to reactivate its 1,980 Mw Talwandi Sabo commercial power project, put on hold last year.

The expenditure of the project, scheduled to begin by 2014, would be Rs 10,000 crore.
