UrtheCast provides HD color videos of Earth from ISS
UrtheCast, a Vancouver-based technology company, has offered HD live color videos of Earth, filmed from cameras mounted on the International Space Station (ISS).
The videos of detailed aerial views of Barcelona, London, and Boston were officially released Thursday. They range in length from 34 to 47 seconds and covered areas of up to 1.92 x 1.08 kms. Boats, buses and cars on the ground are all clearly visible at roughly one meter resolution.
UrtheCast CEO Scott Larson stressed that the images offered are not spy stuff, rather are for monitoring deforestation, farming, and social issues.
Larson said, “Our vision is to democratize earth observation imagery, which to us means taking a view of Earth that nobody has really had the opportunity to see before and streaming it out online for as many people as possible".
Larson added in the videos that people can see things the way they currently are, and also how they have changed. Their company shows amazing views that have not been ever seen before.
This will be different from Google Earth as they will offer real time streaming videos captured from space. The images will keep on updating constantly as the space station orbits Earth more than 16 times a day.
Larson mentioned that paying clients will also be able to order shots of specific sites around the globe. UrtheCast recently signed its first government client for $85 million over the next several years.
The company hopes to fully run the video streams by the end of Summer 2015 with the high resolution Irish camera.
