UCF Gifts Bionic Prosthetic Limb to 10-Year-Old Girl born without Right Hand
On her visit to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Florida, Annika Emmert, 10, was gifted with an invaluable gift—a new bionic prosthetic limb. A team of students from University of Central Florida (UCF), Orlando, are the ones behind this noble gesture.
Emmert is a great fan of the film ‘Dolphin Tale’. She visited the aquarium to meet the movie star, the Dolphin, ‘Winter’, who features in the movie. On her visit, she was stunned to be greeted by Cozi Zuehlsdorff, 16, who stars in the movie.
Zuehlsdorff then took Emmert to a cooler, which the latter thought to be having dolphin food. Emmert got surprised and tears started reeling down her eyes as the prosthetic limb was present there. When she came to know that the limb is from the side of University of Central Florida, she could not stop thanking them.
Using the 3-D printers donated by Stratasys, the researchers have produced the prosthetic limb. The bionic arms have interchangeable parts that can be adjusted and they will be reprinted as the little girl grows.
The university has worked with Limbitless Solutions, a non-profit organization, to provide them personalized bionics and solutions for disabled children who are unable to afford expensive prosthesis.
The students have been sharing their designs so that more people can volunteer in making more artificial limbs for children.
