Two injured in separate shark attacks in N.C. waters
On Sunday, two teenagers were attacked by shark in two separate incidents. The media reports suggest that both of them had serious injuries and they lost their limbs in the attack. The condition is stable as per the latest reports.
According to local officials, at around 4:12 pm a shark along Oak Island beach attacked a 12-year-old girl; she was seriously injured. And a 16-year-old boy was attacked by a shark in a separate incident at approximately 5:51 pm.
As per Martha Harlan, a spokeswoman for the New Hanover Regional Medical Center in North Carolina, both were taken to the hospital that afternoon. According to her, both were brought to the hospital in critical condition and were in fair condition as of around 11:30 pm Sunday night.
She said in a phone interview that both the victims' parts of left arm were amputated; in case of the girl, it was below the elbow and in the boy, it was below the shoulder. The girl was also attacked at lower-left-leg as tissue was damaged there. However, according to Harlan, she didn't hear that the leg requires amputation. Both the victims visited the place from out of town. Harlan said that both the victims had travelled from out of town.
Oak Island Town Manager Tim Holloman said in a press conference that Brunswick County and Oak Island are making efforts to assess the situation. Holloman also said that marine and helicopter are being used for monitoring the area.
According to an Oak Island beachgoer, Steve Bouser, he heard people shouting 'get out of the water, get out of the water'. Bouser told the Associated Press that someone was carrying the girl and people collected over there were trying to help.
