Twelve Indians injured in building collapse in Bahrain

Twelve Indians injured in building collapse in Bahrain Manama, Bahrain - Twelve Indian construction workers were injured Friday when a building under construction on the outskirts of the Bahraini capital collapsed, trapping them under the rubble.

Fire crews were able to rescue 10 of the workers at the site in Juffair. Co-workers rescued another two. All twelve workers were rushed to a local hospital where they were reported in stable condition.

The collapse happened around noon (0900 GMT).

Rescuers deployed body-heat sensors, acoustic sensors, and rescue dogs to search the site to ensure that no other workers were trapped in the rubble. More than 40 workers were at the site at the time of the incident.

Hussain Ali al-Shami, acting head of occupational safety at the Ministry of Labor, told dpa that an immediate shutdown of the construction site had been ordered pending further investigation.

"Our initial investigation indicates that the roof of the building collapsed due to the improper use of construction material while cement was being poured to construct the roof," he said.

He also indicated that the contractor had not abided by safety regulations required by the ministry.

There are an estimated 300,000 Indians living in Bahrain. Some 70,000 of them work in construction.

Their death and injuries account for the lion's share of work site injuries each year.(dpa)
