Truth about so-called "woman" on Red Planetunveiled

The Internet is flooded with comments from many users across the globe over a NASA-captured image which resembles a ghost woman on Mars. Many people initially thought the creature was a massive crab on Mars, but opinions later transformed into a ghostly woman.

However, all rumors have been sent to rest as TIME’s science writer Jeffrey Kluger made it clear that the sight was actually the result of a phenomenon, called pareidolia. It results into seeing shapes that do not belong to actual being.

The photo was captured by the Mars Curiosity rover and posted to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory website. Dr. Seth Shostak, senior astronomer and director of the Center for SETI Research, said the photo does not provide any evidence of life on Mars.

He said that eyes of people deceived them into believing that the image was actually of a ghostly woman on the red planet.

“The fact that so many people are adept at playing 'Where’s Waldo?' with rover photos is a testament to our brain’s ability to pick out creatures in the visual landscape”, he said to HuffPost. He added that it’s similar to what helped our ancestors to avoid predators or hunt prey. However, the strategy is certainly not the good one to go for extraterrestrial life.

Pareidolia leads human beings to look for patterns, meaning and even faces in images. What the image shows on Mars is not a ghostly woman, but likely a strangely shaped rock or dirt formation.
