Tornado hits Coal City, Illinois

According to authorities, a tornado hit Coal City, Illinois on Monday. It caused damage to homes, brought down power lines and left roadways flooded.

As per reports, the severe weather hit the city after 9 pm. The National Weather Service confirmed several tornadoes in the region, together with one in Coal City, which is a 5,500-population village located southwest of Chicago.

Brittany Halliday, daughter of Coal City Mayor Terry Halliday, told a regional newspaper, the Herald-News, "There are some houses that are no longer there. There are (boat) trailers all over the place. It's just a mess".

As per a news release by Coal City's Fire and EMS, flooding caused blockage of roadways, and search crews were removing people from their homes. Crews are looking forward to assess the storm damage.

Coal City Police Sgt. Tom Logan told ABC News that there were no reports of deaths or serious injuries because of the storm, however many buildings, together with the fire department were damaged to large extent.

Logan said that houses that were there once have been totally destroyed by the tornado. As per reports, an emergency shelter was set up at the Coal City High School; it is located at 650 W. Division St. Earlier also, a tornado was reported in Coal City in 2013.

Severe thunderstorms that hit northern Illinois produced at least one tornado that damaged homes and uprooted trees; at least seven people were injured as a result of it.
