Tibetan exiles to tonsure themselves on April 10
Dharamsala, Apr 2: The Tibetan Solidarity Committee has announced the launch of a 'Shave Your Head For Tibet' campaign from April 10.
Tibetan parliamentarian and member of the Central Solidarity Committee Penpa Tsering said the tonsuring exercise would show solidarity with the people who had been killed in the recent military crackdown in Tibet.
Tsering said they would start enrolling volunteers from April 7.
"On April 7, there will be a worldwide movement. This is to show our solidarity with the Tibetans inside Tibet and also to send a strong political message to the international community that the exiled Tibetan community is with the Tibetans inside Tibet. This is a non-violent tactic which the Tibetans inside Tibet can also pick up by shaving their head to show their resentment against the Chinese," Tsering said.
Many Tibetans have already tonsured their heads to sympathize with the sufferings of the people in Tibet.
The three-day worldwide campaign starting April 10 will highlight issues that Tibetans have been raising with regard to the recent peaceful demonstrations in Tibet.
Tsering said that demonstrations would be held in six major cities of India and Nepal.
"Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore Tibetan settlements have been designated to go to different locations. Tibetans in Nepal will meet in Kathmandu. We are directing Tibetans in the West to discuss amongst the local organizing committee, to decide the venue of people who will participate and for how many days will they do this," he said.
Tsering said that on first day, there will be mock funeral for 142 Tibetan martyrs killed by Chinese police in Lhasa and rest of the days there will prayers for their emancipation.
Coinciding with Olympic torch relay on April 17, passing through New Delhi, Tibetan Solidarity Committee made requests to police to allow all the Tibetan masses with their messages and banners at the venue.
The committee, however, assured that no Tibetan at the gathering would disrupt the Olympic torch rally. (ANI)
