Tibet 'government' condemns violent protests during torch run

Tibet 'government' condemns violent protests during torch runNew Delhi - The India-based Tibetan government-in-exile on Thursday said it did not support the disruption of the Olympic torch run and appealed to people not to resort to violence during the Indian leg of the relay.

"The Kashag (cabinet of the government-in-exile) again appeals to the Tibetan diaspora to desist from violent protests and respect the law of the host country and ensure that Indian sentiments are not hurt as the Olympic torch relay passes through India," a statement said.

India's northern hill town of Dharamsala is home to the Dalai Lama and his Tibetan government-in-exile.

An estimated 100,000 Tibetan refugees - the largest concentration of Tibetans outside Tibet - live across India. Many of them fled to India with the Dalai Lama after China cracked down on the Tibetan uprising of 1959.

The statement said: "Since March 10, Tibetans from all provinces of Tibet have been peacefully protesting the repressive policies of the Chinese government at the cost of their lives."

"Similarly, those Tibetans who have initiated peaceful protests outside Tibet in solidarity with their brethren in Tibet should remain non-violent," the statement added.

Meanwhile, the prime minister of the Tibetan government-in-exile, Samdong Rinpoche appealed to Tibetans not to stop the torch.

"The Tibetan government and many people from Tibet are not trying to stop the torch. The Dalai Lama supports the Olympics," he told reporters in New Delhi.

"There are some people who do not agree with our stand," he said, adding, "In a democratic society people have a right to their opinion."

China has been nervous about the widespread Tibetan protests across India and apprehends violence by Tibetan activists during the Olympic flame's passage in the Indian capital.

India has assured Beijing that it will make adequate security arrangements during the torch run in New Delhi on April 17.

A four-member Chinese security team was in Delhi to hold talks with Indian security officials to take stock about the security arrangements in the city. (dpa)
