Tampa, Dubai may face extreme 'grey swan' storms
According to a new study, cities, including Tampa and Dubai are going to become increasingly vulnerable to uncommon, global-warming-fueled super storms in the coming time. In the study published on Monday, researchers said they have named the phenomena 'grey swan' storms.
This name is given as a comparison to the term 'black swan'. Black swam are the unexpected events that have a huge impact. Researchers said that although 'grey swans' are highly unlikely, yet they can be predicted with some level of confidence.
During the study, researchers focused on the tropical cyclones such as hurricanes and typhoons. As per the study the likelihood of the 'grey swans' will increase because of man-made climate change, as warmer seawater will raise the chances of formation of storms. In such storms water of at least 80 degrees is needed to develop.
Published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Climate Change, the study was led by a renowned hurricane expert Ning Lin of Princeton and Kerry Emmanuel of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
During the research, computer models and past storm records were used by researchers to make predictions of how frequently such big storms might hit.
By 2100, one of such big 'grey swans' are likely to bring storm
